Session date:13 November 2026
Location: Online
The Journal of Management Studies is pleased to invite you to our next JMS Dialogue Webinar, where we will explore the timely and thought-provoking debate:
How can we utilise Abductive Reasoning in Management and Organisation Studies?
This JMS Point-Counterpoint focuses on the promises and perils of abduction vis-à-vis induction as modes of reasoning. Can this mode of reasoning be one that steers a middle ground between unbounded, ‘creative’ abduction and highly proceduralized, ‘disciplined’ abduction? Or will consensus-based plausibility engender ‘semiotic abduction’, where mechanisms become widely accepted through repetition rather than verification?
Featuring:
Introductory remarks by JMS Consulting Editor Chris Wickert
Point: Professor Cliff Oswick – Advancing Abductive Theory Building: Balancing Creative Curiosity and Programmatic Rigour Through ‘Loosely Coupled Abduction’
Counterpoint: Professors Igor Filatotchev, Marco Giarratana, Martina Pasquini, and Konstantina Valogianni – Challenges of Semiotic Abduction in Management Research
Join us as we examine how scholars build theory, the risks of consensus without validation, and how creativity and rigour can work side by side.
