Submission Formatting and Structure

Before submitting your manuscript to JMS, you must ensure it meets all the requirements outlined below. This includes formatting, referencing, and AI usage standards, as well as alignment with the journal’s scope.

Following them gives your manuscript the best chance of progressing smoothly through editorial screening and peer review. Not adhering to these guidelines risks delays or rejection.

Length of Article: 10,000–13,000 words is typical. Original or Review Article Manuscripts exceeding 15,000 words may be returned for reduction before editorial consideration.

Cover Letter

Your submission must be accompanied by a cover letter. Please include brief responses to the following points, where applicable:

Contribution to JMS: Summarise how your manuscript advances or contributes to ongoing debates in the Journal of Management Studies (JMS) and explain why JMS is the best fit for your work. This should include reference to specific JMS papers on which your paper builds or to which you are responding; alternatively, if your paper is bringing a new debate to JMS, please explain how this relates to, or enriches existing work within the journal.

AI Use Compliance: Confirm that your manuscript complies with JMS’s policy on the use of AI in research (available here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/joms.13045 see Table 1 of the policy for a summary). Acknowledge any use of AI tools (e.g., for language editing, data analysis support, etc.) in the cover letter and in the manuscript, where appropriate. If you have not used AI in any form in your manuscript, please state that.

Use of Previously Published Data: If your paper uses data that you or your coauthors have previously published, clearly explain how your current work offers a new and original contribution. List all related articles that use the same dataset and highlight the similarities and differences, such as the research questions addressed or theoretical frameworks applied. Note: For widely used archival datasets (e.g., ISS, Compustat, national social surveys), only cite your most directly relevant prior work using these datasets.

Reviewer Eligibility: If you have received feedback on your manuscript prior to submission, you should list all individuals who are already familiar with the paper and your identity, as they are not eligible to act as reviewers.
