Navigating Resource Tensions During Diversification in Ecosystems: Strategic Leadership Across Organizational Levels

Ecosystem diversification develops new interdependencies in a bid to extend joint value creation. Strategic leaders across organizational levels must navigate these tensions either through peer-level interactions to secure resource access or across hierarchies to limit or even withdraw resource access. This paper identifies and defines two types of ecosystem resource tension: commensalistic and rivalrous. Each type generates distinct patterns of leadership actions and outcomes.
