Marginalized Communities and the Problem of Research Extraction

By Joel Bothello and Leandro Bonfim

In this essay, Joel Bothello and Leandro Bonfim call for greater recognition of, and responsibility in, the study of marginalized groups. They question how research can move beyond extractive practices by embedding reciprocity, respect, and reflexivity into the research process. The authors argue for prioritising substantive outcomes for communities over the pursuit of academic outputs, urging scholars to rethink their role and responsibilities in management research.
