Different Aspirations, Different Directions: A Behavioural Perspective on Negative Performance Discrepancy and Problemistic Search

How do firms respond when performance falls below expectations? This paper examines how different forms of negative performance discrepancy shape problemistic search in different ways. The study shows that negative social performance discrepancy is associated with broader search scope, while negative historical performance discrepancy is associated with deeper search. It also highlights the role of CEO temporal focus in shaping these responses, offering fresh insight into behavioural theory and strategic decision-making under pressure.
