This paper examines how CEO narcissism, CEO sex, and sustainability media attention jointly shape firms’ environmental performance. Using evidence from S&P 1500 firm panel data alongside an experiment with strategic leaders, the authors show that positive sustainability media attention can have opposing effects: more narcissistic men CEOs tend to increase environmental performance, while more narcissistic women CEOs may move away from further environmental efforts.
