‘Let Me Explain’: A Comparative Field Study on How Experts Enact Authority Over Clients When Facing AI Decisions

Across banking, biotechnology, and recruitment, the authors reveal how experts respond when AI produces decisions they cannot overturn but must still present to clients. The paper identifies four explaining practices (masking, showcasing, enhancing, and calibrating) and shows how client recognition of expertise and opportunities for learning shape whether expert authority is reinforced or eroded.
