Historical Perspectives on Deglobalization’s Drivers, Outcomes, and Managerial Responses

How can history help us better understand today’s deglobalization challenges? This paper introduces the Special Issue ‘Historical Perspectives on Deglobalization’s Drivers, Outcomes, and Managerial Responses’. The article sets the stage for the collection by examining how business history can provide deeper insight into the causes, consequences, and organizational responses associated with deglobalization across different historical periods. Rather than viewing deglobalization as a sudden or purely contemporary phenomenon, the paper highlights its cyclical and uneven nature, showing how firms, governments, and managers have historically shaped (and responded to) changing global economic conditions. The authors also outline key themes explored throughout the Special Issue, including geopolitical tensions, shifting trade relationships, institutional change, and strategic adaptation.
