In this paper, the authors introduce the concept of carbon populism to show how fossil fuel industries make representative claims in both the public and political spheres, shaping national identity, expert knowledge, and public policy. Drawing on a study of Australia’s coal and gas industries, the paper explains how these claims help legitimize industry influence and obstruct the transition to a low-carbon economy.
